Participants will learn about traditional lighting methods and the role candles played in everyday life while creating their own hand-dipped taper candles. \nThe workshop will cover historic approaches to measuring and preparing wax\, followed by guided instruction in dipping taper candles using methods similar to those practiced in the past. Participants will also learn how to properly finish and care for their candles so they can be safely used at home. \nNo prior experience is necessary. All materials are provided\, and each participant will leave with a set of handmade candles and a deeper understanding of historic household lighting. Participants should bring a lunch. Using original equipment and time-honored techniques\, Meckley Brooms combines functional craftsmanship with whimsical designs—bringing both history and hands-on fun to this workshop. \nThanks to the Poconos Free Art and Craft Workshops Fund\, these workshops are free and open to the public for participants ages 15 and older\, offering a unique opportunity for Monroe County residents to explore historic handcrafts\, learn new skills\, and take home their own handmade brooms. DESCRIPTION:Activities turn towards the things that go bump in the night around Halloween! \nOn Friday and Saturday nights put your detective skills to the test by helping solve a murder mystery! A guide will take you around the farm as you meet the suspects\, gather clues\, and more! This program takes approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours and tours are continuous. The last tour begins at 8:30 pm from the log cabin gift shop. Get into the haunted Halloween spirit with something more unique than just another haunted house. \nThis program is designed by a forensic specialist and includes discussions and depictions of death and murder. The farm is extremely dark at night and we encourage visitors to bring flashlights. Actors are not permitted to touch visitors. Feel the tranquility of the live Nativity where the Baby Jesus sleeps in the Virgin Mary’s arms\, attended by man and beast. Listen to stories in front of the fireplace in the Grandaddy Cabin. \nMeet the mythical Belsnickel by hearth-light in the Cellar Kitchen. He’s come before St. Nicholas to warn the naughty and reward the nice. Revel in the warmth of the potbelly stove alight in the one-room schoolhouse and join the sing-along of traditional carols. Marvel at the miniature village scene—the traditional Christmas Putz—in the Victorian parlor. \nStroll through the magical Christmas Tree Forest sponsored by Quiet Valley’s Members’ families and local businesses. Chime in to reward the most deserving decorative design. \nEnjoy complimentary hot chocolate or warm cider with homemade cookies to round-out this hour-and-half long journey through the customs of this 19th Century Pennsylvania German farm.
