SUMMARY:Bake Oven Highlight
DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, the bake oven was the heart of the homestead kitchen\, providing families with fresh bread and baked goods on a weekly basis. From preparing the fire to testing the heat\, baking in a traditional wood-fired oven was both an art and a science. Delicious aromas and warm loaves will fill the air as we bring this heritage skill to life. Samples will be available. \nDate: Saturday\, June 20Time: 10:00am – 3:00pmFee: Included with tour admission

SUMMARY:Corn Husk Doll Highlight
DESCRIPTION:For generations\, children on the farm found creative ways to make their own toys from simple\, natural materials. One beloved example is the corn husk doll—a handcrafted figure made from the dried leaves of a corn cob. At Quiet Valley\, we demonstrate how these traditional dolls were made using time-honored techniques passed down through the years. Guests can watch as a plain corn husk is folded\, tied\, and shaped into a charming doll\, reflecting the resourcefulness of early American families. This hands-on activity offers a glimpse into the everyday life and imagination of children in the 18th and 19th centuries. \nDate: Monday\, September 1Time: 10:00am – 3:00pmFee: Included with tour admission

SUMMARY:A Visit with Emma Marsh
DESCRIPTION:Step into the year 1893 and meet Mrs. Emma Marsh Depper\, who has spent the past five years building a life with her husband\, Horace Depper—the fifth generation of the Depper family to inherit the Quiet Valley farm. In this engaging first-person interpretation\, Emma welcomes guests into her home as neighbors\, sharing what it’s like to run a household\, care for livestock\, and support her husband’s work on the land. Married in 1888\, Emma offers a personal glimpse into married life\, community traditions\, and the rhythm of rural living at the end of the 19th century. Through her stories\, visitors experience history not as a list of dates\, but as the living memory of someone who lived it. \nDate: Saturday\, July 22Time: 10:00am – 3:00pmFee: Included with tour admission

SUMMARY:Flax & Linen Day
DESCRIPTION:Flax (Linum usitatissimum)\, also known as common flax\, is a member of the genus Linum in the family Linaceae. It is a food and fiber crop cultivated in cooler regions of the world. The textiles made from flax are known in the Western countries as linen\, and traditionally used for bed sheets\, underclothes\, and table linen. In addition to referring to the plant itself\, the word “flax” may refer to the unspun fibers of the flax plant. Flax fibers are taken from the stem of the plant\, and are two to three times as strong as those of cotton. Additionally\, flax fibers are naturally smooth and straight. Europe and North America depended on flax for vegetable-based cloth until the nineteenth century\, when cotton overtook flax as the most common plant used for clothing and making rag-based paper. Come watch as flax is spun into linen thread and learn more about this amazing fiber. \n\nDate: Tuesday August 6th\nTime: 10:00am – 3:30pm\nFee: Included with tour admission\nInstructor: Sue Oiler & Friends
