Participants will stitch a wildflower design onto a tote bag while learning basic embroidery techniques\, including transferring a pattern\, starting and finishing stitches\, and building texture and detail with thread. \nThis workshop is designed for both beginners and those with some embroidery experience. You’ll leave the main session well on your way to completing your tote\, with guidance on how to continue stitching at home. Click here to see the topics for all three weeks. \n\nTopics:\n\nGrades 1-4: Winter Crafts and Games\n\nInstructor: Rachel Kresge\nDescription: Campers will step back in time to discover how children on a 19th-century farm spent their winter days. The group will enjoy hands-on activities making historic winter crafts\, such as corn husk dolls\, tin punch ornaments\, and braided wool items. They will also play traditional games like hoop rolling\, marbles\, and relay-style winter chores\, learning how children long ago entertained themselves without screens or electronics. Through creating\, playing\, and exploring together\, students will gain a fun and interactive understanding of winter life in the past.\n\n\nGrades 5-8: Art from Observation\n\nInstructor: Joan Glusiec\nDescription: Campers will spend the day developing their drawing and artistic skills through guided instruction and creative exploration. In the morning\, students will work with pencil\, learning basic techniques such as perspective\, shading\, and drawing objects from life. Using items found around Quiet Valley and simple still-life setups\, campers will practice careful observation and sketching. In the afternoon\, campers will build on their drawings by adding color and experimenting with different art materials\, including tempera paint\, watercolor\, and pastels. Students may create as many or as few artworks as they choose while exploring the medium or mediums that interest them most. DESCRIPTION:Historic Lighting & Hand-Dipped Candle Workshop\nSaturday\, February 28 | 10:00 AM–2:00 PM\nCost: $45 per person \nStep back in time and explore how people lit their homes before electricity in this hands-on historic lighting workshop. Participants will learn about traditional lighting methods and the role candles played in everyday life while creating their own hand-dipped taper candles. \nThe workshop will cover historic approaches to measuring and preparing wax\, followed by guided instruction in dipping taper candles using methods similar to those practiced in the past. Participants will also learn how to properly finish and care for their candles so they can be safely used at home. \nNo prior experience is necessary. All materials are provided\, and each participant will leave with a set of handmade candles and a deeper understanding of historic household lighting. Participants should bring a lunch.
